Wambo corporate background
Wambo About | Friday, July 15th, 2005 | Trackback
Wambo is the developer of patent-pending technology that enables distribution of media content without needing to deploy and maintain a large infrastructure. The Wambo File System (WFS) is a hybrid P2P network developed by former Stanford/NASA engineers. This unique technology, built from the ground up, enables robust, fast and cost effective file sharing.
Origins. Some time in the spring of 2005, Guillaume Thonier, Arnaud Tellier and Xavier Casanova started working on their spare time on a P2P distributed file system called “Perenety”. In the fall, a first prototype was created and Perenety Inc. was incorporated. Early 2006, they raised their first round of funding and moved from Stanford, where they were sharing one desk for three, to a “luxurious” 2,500 sq/ft office in Sunnyvale. In the fall of ‘06, when Perenety’s name was changed to “Wambo”, a name the founding trio picked after polling a few dozen high-school students in Lodi, California.

The first 100 users
Core technology. The WFS is the most comprehensive platform for reducing all bandwidth and storage costs across any file type, file size and audience scale. It is the first hybrid P2P network to cleverly combine the latest compression, error correction and peer-swarming technologies to massively reduce bandwidth and infrastructure costs. Whether deployed as a peer-assisted CDN, or as the pending-pending infrastructure-less peer CDN, the Wambo File System provides unbeatable performance and cost efficiency in all content delivery scenarios.
Product. Swapper is a recently released media messaging application developed by Wambo. With Swapper, users can privately share entire collections of photos and videos with their friends without having to worry about the traditional limits (number of files, size, time to upload). Users may also post their media or files on a public profile page, where visitors can freely view, download and comment the content.

Creative thinking at its best
Investors. Wambo was incorporated in September 2005 and received a first round of investment in February 2006. Wambo is backed by world class investors including venture capital firm Partech International and Silicon Valley’s well-known investor Ron Conway.

Founders. The core team brings close to 30 years of combined experience in the software industry: Xavier Casanova, CEO brings to bear 10 years of start-up experience as Founder and Chairman of Fireclick, acquired by Digital River (NASD: DRIV), where he held leadership positions in the areas of product management, marketing and business development. Arnaud Tellier, CTO has more than 10 years of experience in startups and academic research, specializing in databases, networking and user interfaces. Most recently, he was lead software developer in a NASA-Stanford joint venture, where he worked with Guillaume Thonier, Wambo’s Chief Architect. Thonier comes to Wambo with 9 years of software experience focusing on protocol design, algorithms and artificial intelligence, with solid startup experience as well. Casanova, Tellier and Thonier all hold multiple patents, have been active members of academic research projects and have attended Stanford University’s graduate school in the last century, where they first met.
